Do I have to move away?
Guard service is normally tied to a unit, allowing many Soldiers to live, work, and attend school in their home state. Training and military missions can require travel.
Is it really only one weekend a month and two weeks a year?
That phrase is a common baseline description, but actual requirements can vary by unit, training, schools, missions, and activation.
Can I go to college while serving?
Many Soldiers do. Military training and service obligations still have to be planned around school.
Can I pick my job?
You can choose from jobs for which you qualify that are available when you enlist.
Will I deploy?
Deployment or activation is possible. Nobody should join based on a promise that they will never deploy.
What if I’m still in high school?
There are pathways for eligible students, with additional rules for minors and training timing.
Does the Guard automatically pay 100% of any college?
No. Education assistance depends on the benefit, eligibility, school, tuition, funding, and current rules.
What if I have medical or legal history?
Tell the recruiter. Some issues are disqualifying, some may be reviewable, and some may require documentation or a waiver. Hiding information creates bigger problems.
